Tony Bellew believes Everton have the best goalkeeper on Merseyside, even after their rivals broke the transfer record to bring in a new number one this summer.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has finally fixed his long-standing goalkeeper woes by landing Brazil international Alisson in a deal that could be worth up to £67million.
He is regarded as one of the finest talents in world football and, at 25, still has decades in the tank.
But Everton devotee Bellew believes Goodison Park hosts the superior glovesman in Jordan Pickford.
Pickford, 24, became a national hero during England’s brilliant World Cup campaign this summer and, according to Bellew, proved he is worth every penny of the £30m the Toffees spent to sign him from Sunderland last year.
The British Boxing star told talkSPORT: “I’d just like to say, I remember being laughed at by many Kopites when Everton signed Jordan Pickford for £30m, saying we had just bought a relegated goalkeeper and all that.
“Well, you have just paid £66m and you’ve only got the second best goalkeeper on Merseyside!”
Asked about the Toffees’s summer business, or lack of it, on Tuesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Bellew added: “Everton need longevity and consistency and ultimately Silva needs the get the players in he wants.
“There have been no transfers at all so far while other clubs, especially the horrible lot over the road, are conducting business.
“They are just buying whoever they want!”
