Martial and Mourinho have not got a good relationship, however, United’s vice-chairman Ed Woodward is determined to keep the 22-year-old at the club
Anthony Martial could sign a new long-term contract at Manchester United as he believes he can outlast under pressure Jose Mourinho at the club.
The Frenchman has been offered a new five-year deal even though Mourinho does not want him at the club.
Scrutiny over Mourinho’s position at Old Trafford increased following United’s resounding defeat at home to Tottenham on Monday night and a loss at Burnley on Sunday could make things untenable for the boss.
The contract situation is another example of the split that exists between Mourinho and Ed Woodward. The Portuguese reportedly wanted to offload the 22-year-old as he was not impressed by his attitude.
Martial’s current deal at the club expires in the summer of 2020 should the Red Devils activate the 12-month option in it.
And if he signs a new deal worth about £130,000-a-week, it would be a huge blow for Mourinho.
The striker was fined £180,000 for failing to keep in contact with the club after he returned to France for the birth of his second child in the middle of their pre-season tour of the USA.
On Friday, Mourinho will appear in front of the media for the first time since his post-match rant after the Spurs game in which he demanded more respect from the press. The Portuguese is due to hold his weekly preview press conference at Carrington.
