Richard Keys has been lambasted for his comments about Jamie Vardy, with former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson and Vardy’s wife Rebekah letting loose on Twitter.

The Leicester City striker confirmed his retirement from England duty earlier in the week alongside Chelsea stalwart Gary Cahill.

However, Keys took exception to the decision and criticised the pair on Twitter.

He wrote: “Vardy & Cahill have covered themselves leaving the door open but I will never understand a player walking out on his country.

“It says a lot about his personality & lack of character. For sure he will let you down badly again later in life.”

In an immediate response to the post, Tomlinson wrote a measured Tweet to retort.

The pair are friends, with Tomlinson once touted as the potential lead role to play the 31-year-old in a film about his rise from non-league to Premier League.

However, former I’m A Celebrity star Rebekah Vardy was far less reserved in her response.

She wrote: “How embarrassing….I think that statement says more about you Richard! Stick to presenting and talking crap.”

Vardy then shared an article with Keys’ ex-wife, who claimed to be ‘devastated when her husband allegedly cheated on her.

Vardy wrote: “Now talk to me about lack of character #knob.”
