The former Bolton Wanderers defender has scored 14 goals since joining Chelsea in 2016
Marcos Alonso is the best left-back in Europe, according to Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri.
The former Sunderland and Bolton Wanderers defender has two assists and a goal to his tally already this season, after opening the scoring against Bournemouth.
A 2-0 win for the Blues ensures they keep the pace with Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
But while Eden Hazard notched yet another fantastic strike to add to his ever-growing collection, it was the Spain international who garnered special praise from Sarri.
“Alonso, at the moment, this position at left-back is maybe the best in Europe,” said Sarri.
“Physical qualities at a top level, I think. He’s doing very well in the offensive phase.
“But I also think he can improve in the defensive phase.
“If he improves that, he could be the best left-back in the world.”
The 27-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge in somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in 2016, with fans unsure as to why the club had paid £24million to Fiorentina for his services.
But, after scoring 14 goals in the Premier League since his arrival, it remains a distinct possibility he can go on to become one of the best left-backs in the world – per Sarri’s prediction.
