Alli withdrew from the Three Lions’ squad for their friendly against Switzerland on Tuesday night
Gareth Southgate has handed Tottenham a major boost by saying he expects Dele Alli to be fit for their Premier League clash with Liverpool on Saturday.
There were fears Alli would be out of action for this weekend’s game as he withdrew from the England squad on Monday with a ‘minor strain’ after playing 90 minutes of the Three Lions’ UEFA Nations League defeat to Spain on Saturday.
However, the England boss was optimistic about Alli’s fitness despite the fact the midfielder will play no part of the friendly against Switzerland on Tuesday night – a game you can listen to live on talkSPORT from 20:00.
Southgate said: “He [Alli] has just had a minor strain and should be fine for his club at the weekend I would think, but tomorrow’s game will come too quickly.”
“I thought his performance [against Spain] was good.
“In terms of his retention of the ball I thought he was improved in that area, his work without the ball has been good over the last six months with us.
“He makes critical forward runs, like everybody else we learned a lot from the game.”
Spurs host the Reds at the national stadium on Saturday in what was meant to be their first game at the north London club’s new stadium.
Their opponents are currently top of the league having claimed a maximum twelve points from their opening four matches.
